Millie is just 16 years old, yet has taken on her work experience placement at the De Morgan Foundation as though she has worked in museums for years! Even an intense day of learning the ins and outs of the museum world didn’t put her off – and I’m talking Spectrum Standards, Accreditation, Government Indemnity Scheme, and MA Code of Ethics here – in fact, it spurred her on to consider how and why we can and should open our Collection to audiences who might need a range of methods to help them. She has, in just a few days, researched, written and bravely recorded audio guides for the De Morgan exhibition ‘Decoration or Devotion’ at the Watts Gallery, being mindful of how she can make then descriptive to aid visitors with sight loss.

Of the experience, Millie says, “All of the audio guides I have done are now up on soundcloud, so please have a listen. They took a lot longer than I originally thought that they would. There was a lot of recording then editing then recording again but it gave me a really good opportunity to learn more about the De Morgans and the artwork that they have produced. I feel that the audio guides are really important as they give a wider range access to the De Morgan Collection and they allow for different interpretations of the artwork to be given.”
