Double study of a seated man holding a staff for Evelyn De Morgan’s painting The Valley of the Shadows. Evelyn De Morgan (née Pickering), 1897. Tonal study in in conté crayon and pastel on brown wove paper. In contrast to the standing figure for this composition (DMF_EDM_D0105) the seated figure which appears in the foreground of ‘The Valley of the Shadows’ is a more worked and detailed study, concentrating on the underlying form of the seated figure in order to ensure accuracy in the necessary foreshortening of the limbs and the way the cloth of the figures robes drape over the body.
