In the early 1900s, Evelyn De Morgan painted a series of pictures which are set indoors. These are very different to her usual depictions of women in Italian landscapes or symbolist clouds of rainbow mist.

The interior works have solid barriers, rigid constrictions, and feel incredibly claustrophobic – much how this feminist artist saw the position of women in society. She took control of the domestic, private space of women and used it as a symbol for entrapment and inequality in her paintings.
