Inscriptions: | Handwritten frame verso: Mrs Stirling, The Thorny Path. She left the palace of the King, her father; She left the music, and she left the throng; She left the thornless flowers, hers to gather; At her own will, without a thought of wrong. At the great bidding of another, Father; The King of Kings, whose mandate is so strong; She turned from pleasure, unto suffering rather; And set her feet the thorny path along; There were plants to pierce and briars to sting her; Snakes that were hidden, savage beast astir; And yet she knew it was the way to bring her; Into the Path of Peace prepared for her; Where, after wounds and anguish bravely borne; there shone a glory from a Crown of thorn. The above verse was writtten by Mrs Flemming, Rudyard Kiplings' sister, on the lovely picture by Evelyn De Morgan entitled 'The Thorny Way', which was purchased by the Municipal Gallery, Cape Town. (One line of the original writing was obliterated by damp). (NB: Dimensions are frame size) |
