Description:

The model for this drawing is Alessandro di Marco, whose features can be seen in a number of paintings by Evelyn De Morgan, including The Gilded Cage, A Soul in Hell and, in this instance, The Valley of Shadows. First discovered by Leighton in Rome, di Marco travelled to England in the late 1860s where he found work as a professional model at the life schools of the Royal Academy and later at the Slade, where Evelyn first drew him. He modelled regularly for Leighton, Poynter, Blake Richmond and Burne-Jones, as well as for many other Victorian painters.
