Evelyn De Morgan 'Study for Earthbound' Ex Knightshayes Court, Exeter N.T. Evelyn De Morgan, 65 study for 'Earthbound' c1897. Chalk and gold paint on grey paper. De Morgan Foundation on loan to the National Trust, Knightshayes Court. As an inherent part of training at the Slade School of Art, which De Morgan attended, was the seriousness and industry displayed in this study, and the earnest young Evelyn Pickering applied herself with great success. In 1874 she won four prizes, amongst them the First Certificate of 'Drawing from the Antique', while the prizes she collected the next year included the Silver Medal for 'Drawing from Life'. The meticulous preparation for figure subjects which was required and inculcated was premised on drawing, which De Morgan loved. Studies of limbs, gestures, the turn of a head and figural relationships such as the present one were made for each of her major paintings.
