Founded in 1877 as an alternative to the Royal Academy, the Grosvenor Gallery displayed the works of many progressive artists whose works were ignored by the more traditional exhibition venues.  Although it was in business only until 1890, the gallery proved to be an influential force in Victorian art and society, as well as in the evolution of museum practice.
