Other tile designers before De Morgan had shown an interest in Islamic designs, but they had not put them into production. De Morgan fully understood the spirit of Islamic tiles.

A common motif used in both Islamic architecture and design is the ogee, and De Morgan based many patterns on this shape, both abstract and floral. Occasionally he used a red lustre, but generally the designs display the full palette of his 'Persian' colours: deep ultramarine, turquoise, various tones of sage and olive green, rose purple and yellow.
