This design (1896) was originally used in the P.&O. Liner S.S. Arabia as a frieze just below the ceiling in the first class companionway. It has a ogee arch framing a flowering plant, depicted on a nine-inch tile.
S.S. Arabia – Built by Caird & Co., 1898, sunk by a German submarine in the Mediterranean in 1916. An undated newspaper cutting observes “the Germans officially excused themselves on that occasion by saying that they mistook the bright dresses of the lady passengers on the promenade decks for the clothes of Chinese soldiers bound for France
